The Gracie Lineage
In 1925, Carlos Gracie opened the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Brazil, and his brother, Grandmaster Helio Gracie, refined the art around leverage, efficiency, and patience so a smaller, weaker person could defeat a larger opponent.
Rorion Gracie brought Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to the United States in 1978 and opened the first Gracie Academy in North America in Torrance, California, in 1989.
In 1993, the Gracie family created the first UFC, where Royce Gracie stunned the world by defeating every opponent despite being outweighed in nearly every match.
In 2017, Ryron and Rener Gracie established Gracie University to support the art’s worldwide growth. As a certified Gracie University training center, our instruction is structured, complete, and traditional, and our students can be formally evaluated for belt promotions.
