The Path to Black Belt

Beyond the Gracie Combatives belt, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) consists of hundreds of advanced techniques organized into a clearly defined, systematic curriculum called the Master Cycle.

The Master Cycle’s unique structure simplifies the journey to black belt by organizing all of BJJ into seven positional chapters (Mount, Side Mount, Guard, Half Guard, Back Mount, Leg Locks, Standing), each of which is studied for several weeks before moving on to the next chapter.

If you have 12+ months of verifiable experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and you would like to continue on the path to BJJ black belt in a safe, structured, and friendly learning environment, the Master Cycle is for you! If you are just starting out, check out the Gracie Combatives program.

How Every Class Works

  • Review/Warm-Up: every lesson begins with a 10–15 minute review period to revisit previous lessons or techniques you learned online through Gracie University.

  • Technical Instruction: the instructor presents 2–3 new techniques from the current chapter, and you practice them with a cooperative partner until the movements become natural.

  • Focus Sparring: test your skills in controlled exercises like Rapid Mastery Drills, Focus Sparring, and Fight Simulation Drills. Safety comes first, and sparring is 100% voluntary.

  • Free Online Access: active Master Cycle students get a free Gracie University Online subscription with unlimited access to the Master Cycle video curriculum, and can train at any Certified Training Center worldwide for up to 30 days.
